Tumblr reply, the replier's url and icon have been censored: "Hey, as a cult survivor - please don’t do this. It’s insanely disrespectful to compare fictional situations to real life cults that often take advantage of vulnerable people for their own gain."ALT

Fiction often imitates real life situations. In fact, fiction is a great way to explore and raise awareness about real things.

It’s not inherently disrespectful to show real things in fiction, or comparing between fiction and real life. It’s all about how you go about it.

Not a cult survivor myself but have spent a lot of time studying them and like statistically if you understand how a cult operates and indoctrinates people you put yourself and your loved ones at a lower risk of being taken in as you will begin to recognise the patterns of indoctrination. There’s way more harm in the fear mongering and sensationalising of cults in news media than there is in critically analysing depictions of cults or cult-like communities in fiction. Fiction can be an educational tool and if more people learn how to spot indoctrination methods because they saw someone draw comparisons to a movie they liked, that’s a net good.

Please help me find that post because I’d love to reblog it.

Found it

AO3 Chapter Notes: "Sorry for vanishing, I did a little too much research on cults and coercive control for Damian's arc, and then I realized ✨️ I ✨️ was raised in a cult, and THEN I ran away to a fishing town cabin on the other side of the country and had to start learning to be a person in the real world. I also forgot how to write. But I'm learning again, so I'm back now! Have some more. 💕"ALT

hello hello i just had an absolute BRAINWAVE abt stizzy/steddyhands

basically, izzy was stedes proper gay awakening, not ed

so we’re all agreed that pirating is an allegory for homosexuaity, right? stede is unconfortable in a married state as he says, he’s uncomfortable being married to a woman and having to portray a proper heterosexual marriage. hes distinctly uncomfortable, and so he runs off to sea to persue a life of piracy, a life of freedom where he can do what he wants and be with whoever he pleases. as jack says, “anything goes at sea.”

and finally, at sea, he does seem better. he looks happier, and his demeanour is insanely positive and optemistic. hes clearly a tea cup half full kind of guy. but as genuinely glad as he away from his family and out on the sea, doing what he wants, a lot of his happy attitude is… not quite fake, but definateky forced to be more than he really feels, because its not turning out quite like he’d hoped and trying remain positive.

up until the end of episode 2, stede is not having a very good time pirating. his crew dont respect him or share his values and have almost mutinied, he’s terrible at fighting, he’s run aground his own ship, lost hostages, and hes accidentally killed a man.

episode 2 is the first time that not only do we stede truly, genuinely enjoy pirating and being good at it, his ruse when negotiating hostages goes off without a hitch even against one of the most notirious pirates out there - which is of course, izzy. izzy brings that out. fucking with izzy is his first true and proper introduction to piracy. hes not fighting the english, hes not dealing with random people on an island, or poor fisherman on a tiny schooner, he’s going up against - and winning against! - an actual pirate.

and he kind of enjoys it.

until then, piracy just hasnt been clicking, but it isnt meeting ed that turns it all around for him. izzy was stedes first taste of true pirating. sure ed teaches him the ins and outs, and ed is the one that stede falls for, but something clicks with stede when he meets and confronts izzy. izzy casts that first spark, that lets stede know he’s on the right track and that this is the life for him, a pirates life, a life at sea - where anything goes.

it is insane how fucking tiny these buttons are did they not like. consider the concept of UI scaling like at all. did they not consider what theyd do if someone had a big monitor. what is this shit

image

why asre there two post buttons. why do i get little numbers next to ‘home’ and 'following’ when btoh are giving me the exact same information. why is it that when you open the account view you have the exact same information on both sides of your screen. why is it that the activity popup obscuires the dashboard now instead of the 1000000 miles of empty space on my god damn desktop. did they not consider the concept of UI scaling at all?????

when i first saw people p[ostp about this i thought maybe they were overreacting because they hate twitter and change but like. whatever you think abotu the concept of 'putting all this shit on the left side of your screen’ as a bold UI innovation or whatever in concept this shit is like. just straight up unfinished. like i legitimately dont understand how this was considered ready to roll out to users

image

why does the activity popup open on the ONE part of my screen i DONT want to be obscured when im using tumblr dot com!!

image

no seriously why is this information displayed twice one inch apart. im not being snarky when i say this genuinely just seems actually unfinished

image
image
image

dont talk to me or my three (3) 'activity’ buttons that show up when you’re already on the activity page ever again

one thing that bothers me is when people act like you “had no childhood” if you missed out on certain things….. that you had to pay for

like no, I didn’t watch this specific nick/disney show growing up because we didn’t have those channels in my house because they were only available on Sky, which was expensive

for most of the first decade of my life, we had FIVE channels and once we got Freeview, that only added, like, 3 kids channels

if it didn’t get reruns on CBBC/CITV, I didn’t see it!!!
